Hawthorne School of Aeronautics was a subsidiary of Hawthorne Flying Service of Charleston, SC, the contractor that operated the contract primary training program at Spence Air Base.  Hawthorne provided professional civilian flying training and support personnel to train military students, in military aircraft, to military standards with the training monitored by a specialized military team selected for that purpose.  Working hand-in-hand with the Hawthorne Flying Training Department were the support departments of Academic Training, Aircraft Maintenance, Supply, Base Engineering and Maintenance, Food Services, Accounting, and Industrial Relations
